Revoke vs Freeze Authority Compared

Keeping the freeze switch versus removing it on Solana, and which one buyers check before they trust a token.

Dexmint Admin

Every Solana token with a freeze authority faces the same fork in the road: keep the switch, so you can lock accounts when you must, or remove it, so holders never have to trust you with that power.

The two options lead to opposite trust stories. This comparison lays out what each choice costs and what buyers read into it.

Keeping the switch

Keeping the freeze authority means you can still respond to a hack, a court order, or a launch-day leak. The price is permanent suspicion: as long as the switch exists, you could freeze anyone, and screening tools flag the token for it.

Some projects accept that trade openly. Stablecoin issuers and regulated tokens keep the authority because the rules they operate under effectively require it, and they say so. The suspicion fades only when the reason is public and specific.

Removing the switch

Revoking deletes the freeze authority in one transaction. After confirmation the mint answers to no one on freezing: no wallet can lock or unlock any account, including yours.

The cost is finality. You lose the emergency brake at the same moment holders stop worrying about it. Revoke only when you are certain the token will never need a freeze again, and thaw every frozen account first.

Which one do buyers check?

Buyers check whether the authority still exists, not what you intend to do with it. Screeners and safety checklists read the mint state directly: authority present means freezable, authority revoked means safe from freezing.

That is why many community tokens revoke right after launch. It converts a promise (we will not freeze) into a fact nobody can undo (nobody can freeze).

Frequently asked questions

Can I revoke and keep freezing?

No. Revoking removes the authority that freezing requires. The two cannot coexist on the same mint.

Is revoking reversible?

No. Solana offers no instruction to restore a revoked authority. The supply, the holders, and trading continue unchanged; only the freeze power is gone for good.

Is this the right tool to remove the authority?

Yes, if your wallet currently holds the freeze authority. One transaction removes it permanently. If you want to lock accounts instead, use the Freeze Accounts tool.
