Token-2022 on Solana: Extensions Explained
When a Token-2022 mint beats classic SPL: transfer fees, non-transferable tokens, and the compatibility trade-off.
Dexmint Admin
Token-2022 supports extensions built into the mint, including transfer fees on eligible transfers and non-transferable tokens. You fill in the form, choose the extensions and authority settings, then sign one transaction.
You choose the extension types when the mint is created, although some extension settings can still change under a retained configuration authority. Dexmint builds the transaction and itemises every fee, while your keys and funds stay in your wallet.
What Token-2022 is
Token-2022, also called Token Extensions, is a newer Solana token program. It attaches supported behaviors directly to a mint. Dexmint includes Transfer Fee and Non-Transferable, plus other extensions explained in the form: mint close, interest-bearing, permanent delegate, default account state, and pausable. Confidential transfers and transfer hooks are not offered.
The transfer fee extension withholds a configured amount on eligible transfers. You set a rate in basis points (100 equals 1%) and a maximum fee, and the configured withdrawal authority can later collect withheld fees. A non-transferable token can never transfer once it reaches a wallet, which suits memberships, achievements, and credentials, although the holder can still burn it.
Choose extension types before creating the mint
Extension types cannot be added or removed after creation. Some settings, such as a transfer fee rate, may remain configurable when you keep the matching authority. The form blocks unsupported combinations and explains which authorities control later changes.
Because these choices are final, a free Devnet rehearsal pays off more here than anywhere else. Switch to Mainnet once the setup is proven.
The honest trade-off: compatibility
Token-2022 is fully supported by Solana and the major explorers, but some wallets, DEXs, and tools still handle it partially or not at all, and a transfer fee can complicate trading integrations.
If maximum compatibility matters more than extensions, the classic SPL creator is the safer pick. Otherwise test on the platforms your holders will actually use before going to Mainnet.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add or remove an extension after launch?
No. Extension types are fixed at creation. Some settings can still change if you retain their configuration authority. Test the exact setup on Devnet before creating a Mainnet mint.
Will every wallet and DEX support my token?
Not yet. Support is broad and growing, but still partial in places. Check the platforms your holders will use, ideally with a free Devnet test first.
Is this the right tool to create my token?
Yes, if you need an extension such as a transfer fee or a non-transferable token. For a normal tradable token, the classic SPL creator works everywhere and is the safer default.
